Merry Christmas from Bethlehem - Church of the Nativity

Merry Christmas--we were in Bethlehem in March
But in lieu of a Christmas Card- we are doing this
blog post.
Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.
The courtyard of the nativity is where people gather on Christmas Eve to sing Christmas carols, the small door in the background is the entrance, called the "Entry of Humility"
It was once larger, but was made smaller to prevent horses and carts entering and looting the church. And now you have to stoop, or bow to enter.
 Our tour group entering.
After passing through the "Entry of Humility" you find yourself in the Greek Orthodox side of the church, the church is owned by two orders of the Greek Orthodox church's and the Roman Catholic Church.
In this picture of Mary, the mother of Jesus is smiling, only in the pictures in the Church of the Nativity is she smiling, because of his birth.  In other churchs she is pictured sad, because of the foreshadow of his death.
The church is built above a grotto or cave where the birthplace is, this is the entrance down to the grotto.
This is our group waiting to enter the grotto, in some tours they have waited hours to get in, we were lucky to have a short wait, but were rushed through because they were closing the grotto for a ceremony.
We had only a few moments down in the grotto, but are so glad we got the chance to see it.
Inside the grotto, between the manger and the birthplace.
The birthplace is the fireplace looking thing on the left, and the manger on the right ( this pic is off the internet because it was too crowded to get a picture like this while we were there)

This fourteen sided star marks the birthplace of Jesus, it is surrounded by marble.  Brian took this picture.
This is the manger.
This is called the chapel of the manger inside the grotto.
In this picture off the internet, they placed a baby doll inside the manger to show how it was.

This courtyard outside the Roman Catholic side of the church is where we gathered.  Michael Wilcox talked about the birth of Christ and we sang Christmas Carols.  I was grateful for the singing, I didn't feel the spirit inside the church or near the manger, probably because we were so rushed, but standing outside contemplating on it, and singing about it was a very emotional experience.
Merry Christmas--Remember the Reason for the Season!!

East Wind Part-5, Dump Day

Okay this is the last east wind blog. Watch the video below it's only about three minutes, and doesn't even come close to showing the magnitude of the clean up effort that took place.  Even with the lines as long as they were at the dump it only took an hour from the time I left our neighborhood with a load to return empty ready for another load. The dump was free for the day. The Bountiful dump was only one of the spots for dropping off branches. I was also aware of the following sites, Bountiful High parking lot, Centerville soccer fields and Layton city dump.

East Wind Part-4

The Sunday after the big wind storm church was canceled for all of Davis and Weber county. Word was it was going to storm again Sunday night, so we needed to clean up as much as possible before it hit. Everyone from young to old pitched in to help. David B. furnished the still shots for the video below, and I shot some video, but nether of us got a lot of pictures in our neighborhood, because we were busy making trips to the dump. It was amazing how many showed up to help.It would have taken the city months to clean up, if the community and the National Guard didn't jump in.

East Wind Part-3

By Thursday evening the power still hadn't come on at Jenny and Jody's homes, so it was decided that Jenny, Sam, and six grand children would stay at our house. Jody and Mike would come over around 11:00 pm when they arrived home from California. Shortly after the grandkids were feed hot waffles for dinner, our power went out for a few hours.
Below is a video of Jenny reading the kids Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery day, by candle light.

The video below a tree blown down in Centerville, where the winds gusted up to 107 mph at times. The hole left behind was over five feet deep.

East Winds Part-2

Be patient it may take a little bit for the videos to load.

The video below I took while driving to Jody's house, and then back to our house.

This next video I took on a drive between Jenny's house and ours. Some of it was a couple days later when the clean up had started.

Fishing at Galveston State Park

Here come the men loaded with all the equipment for a day of fshing.
It was a beautiful morning after the storm, but when the guys bought bait, the salesgirl told them it was too soon after the storm for good fishing.  She said, you must be from out of town!  Yeah we are!

 Setting up the rod holders.
Alan purchased a bait catching net.

 Yep, caught a little fish.

Brian, enjoying the squid they used for bait (just kidding)
Brad with the first catch of the day!

Brian, learning the art of casting into the surf!
Alan, I think he caught it with his little fish.

My cute pedicure!
 Brian with his catch.
I caught one too!
Nolana reeling in to check the bait.

Black drum, Brad had never caught one before.

It was a great day at the beach for all.  Nolana and Brad got pretty sunburned.

Brad and I fixing dinner at the condo.

Galveston Texas

Brian and I, Alan, my brother and his wife Nolana arrived in Houston Tx.  After a wonderful dinner prepared by my brother Brad, we headed to our condo in Galveston.  We arrived late, in the dark and had a hard time finding the condo.  But we did arrive and the next day surveyed our surroundings.
We stayed in the building behind this sign on the middle floor.
Our rental car.
 The beautiful Gulf of Mexico.
A storm was heading in, but the warm wind felt good.
Glad my hat had a chin strap or I would have lost it.

We found these rocks inside the shell, pretty cool!

Oh, I love the pelicans flying.

Alan and I
The back of our condo.
We spent many fun hours watching the heron and other birds in the marsh behind the condo.
